Exciting progress on the public toilets for The Meadows, Leith Links, and Inverleith Park
We are thrilled to share an update on the new, free public toilet facilities being built for The Meadows, Leith Links, and Inverleith Park – designed with people and nature at heart.
These bold, inclusive facilities are set to make a real difference, supporting the diverse needs of our community and visitors alike.
These new toilets will feature:
- A Changing Places facility for those with complex care needs
- An Equality Act-compliant cubicle
- Individual unisex cubicles for privacy and convenience
- A small storage room for tools and water, helping Park Officers and Friends groups nurture the park
A major milestone in inclusive design
This project marks an ambitious milestone for public amenities. Working closely with local groups, stakeholders, and experts, we have created accessible and sustainable spaces that will serve the community now and well into the future. From energy-efficient lighting to water-saving fixtures and a sedum roof, the sustainable features reduce environmental impact while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
Accessibility remains key, with unisex cubicles, baby changers, and grab rails to ensure safe and easy use for everyone. The toilets are designed to be welcoming, user-friendly, and ready for future needs.
Project timeline and next steps - a phased approach to completion
With our new project programme now in full motion, we’re entering a phased rollout that reflects our commitment to thorough planning. The factory build began on 4 November 2024, and Healthmatic is now moving forward with selecting and appointing groundwork teams to start site work in early February.
Targeted completion dates for the three facilities are 21 April, 5 May, and 19 May 2025, though the order of completion may shift based on contractor availability, utility connections, and weather conditions. This staggered schedule allows each phase to be managed with care, ensuring a seamless installation for the community.
Community-centred design
These facilities are designed with extensive community input, ensuring they meet both present and future needs. The landscape around each site will feature wildlife-sensitive lighting, benches, and bike racks to create a space that’s comfortable, accessible, and welcoming.
The provision of these facilities is essential, giving everyone the option to enjoy our parks. We recognise how critical this service is for so many, often determining whether a person or family can visit the park.
We are grateful for the ongoing support and feedback that have shaped this project every step of the way. As we approach completion, there will be more opportunities for input to ensure these facilities continue to serve the community’s needs—both now and in the years to come.
