Bowling Greens

We are currently developing proposals for unused Bowling Greens in parks throughout the city.  Previously under Edinburgh Leisure's stewardship, the bowling greens returned to our department due to underuse. This offers an opportunity to breathe life into these historically important spaces, and to ensure that they are maximising the benefits for both people and nature.

Bowling greens have held a special place in the heart of Edinburgh's communities for generations. They have been centres for socialising, friendly competition, and a reflection of the city's rich heritage. As we look to the future, we see these spaces changing so that they meet the needs of our present population and planet. We aim to create spaces that welcome people of all ages and interests. From revitalised greens for leisurely games on sunny afternoons to modern pavilions hosting community events and educational programmes, the potential for these spaces is as vast as the history they hold. Our team is excited to embark on this journey of renewal, ensuring that the Bowling Greens of Edinburgh once again become integral parts of our city's social fabric.

Our Approach

  • Community Collaboration: Your input is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to make spaces that reflect the diverse needs of Edinburgh's residents. We will do this through open talks and active participation. Some examples of this so far include online workshops, in-person discussions, tailored workshops with diverse groups, and online consultations.

  • We are aiming for Landscape Design Excellence. Once the public consultations are done, our talented designers will weave your ideas into plans. From lush greenery to modern facilities, every detail will be thoughtfully considered.

  • Transparent Process: We believe in transparency every step of the way. After the consultations and design phase, plans will be advertised on My Engagement Hub for the public to provide feedback on. Next, the plans and their feedback will go to Council Committee for thorough review. This will ensure that the vision aligns with the community's best interests.

  • Sustainable Funding: Securing funding is crucial to bringing these projects to life. Once approved, we will consult more with the local community.
