New Public Toilets Coming Soon to Queensferry, Hawes Pier

Public Toilets at Queensferry, Hawes Pier

Work is underway to deliver a new, fully accessible public toilet facility at Hawes Pier in Queensferry.

Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this project builds on the lessons learned from our successful public toilets in parks initiative. These modern facilities are designed to meet the needs of residents, visitors, and businesses while respecting the rich heritage of this iconic location.
Hawes Pier is central to South Queensferry’s history. Built in 1812 by engineers John Rennie and Robert Stevenson, the pier served as a ferry hub for over 150 years. Today, it remains a vibrant focal point for tourism and maritime activities, just 50 metres from the Forth Rail Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This dynamic community and its stunning views make Hawes Pier the perfect spot for improved facilities. Our development balances modern needs with the preservation of this historic and environmentally significant site.

Key Objectives

  • Deliver a fully accessible and inclusive public toilet, including a Changing Places facility, by April 2025.
  • Provide a safe, clean, and welcoming space for all users.
  • Incorporate sustainable features like energy-efficient lighting and green roof.
  • Set a benchmark for public toilet design, supporting Edinburgh’s vision for high-quality community amenities.

The new facilities will include:

  • Restricted access for the Changing Places toilet to ensure privacy and security.
  • Advanced technology such as remote monitoring systems and time-controlled doors.
  • Integrated CCTV for enhanced safety and security.
  • Accessible and individual cubicles for all ages with baby changers, hand grab rails, stoma shelves

What’s Next?

We are finalising designs, including visualisations of two potential locations. These will help stakeholders assess the visual and functional impact of the facilities while ensuring alignment with the site’s heritage. By applying insights from our public toilets in parks project, the team is working closely with contractor Healthmatic, local businesses, community groups, and architects to deliver a facility that meets everyone’s expectations.

A Blend of Heritage and Innovation

This project combines the best of the past and the future. The new toilets will blend seamlessly into their surroundings, honouring Hawes Pier’s historical importance while addressing the needs of modern Queensferry.
