Wilding Wee Spaces

Welcome to Wilding Wee Spaces!

Wilding Wee Spaces is a project led by the City of Edinburgh Council Outdoor Learning and Adventure Education Team in partnership with schools. We contribute to the Edinburgh Nature Network by supporting schools to create ecologically rich spaces, on school grounds or on local park land, which are co-designed with learners and used as outdoor classrooms.

Our Vision

For all schools in Edinburgh to have an ecologically rich space developed and stewarded by pupils in which teachers are confident to teach the curriculum outdoors.

A Wild Wee Space:

  1. Boosts biodiversity
  1. Captures carbon
  1. Works sustainably with water
  1. Is developed and stewarded through a learner-led process
  1. Provides an ecologically rich space which the whole learning community use to access learning as part of the daily life of the school
  1. Nurtures connection to nature and mental well-being for the whole learning community
  1. Empowers positive action on the nature and climate emergency.

We know that we are facing climate and nature emergencies, and action is needed from everyone. Many people feel anxious and helpless in the face of these of these crises.

We also know that humans are more disconnected from nature than ever before, and we need to change our relationships with our ecosystems to be more reciprocal, respectful, and sustainable.

Wilding Wee Spaces empowers learners and teachers to take positive action, bringing Learning for Sustainability to life by making a real difference. Using a learner-led process, young people are more deeply connected to their Wild Wee Spaces and gain the skills to make change happen. We hope this will empower the next generation to carry on making the positive change our planet needs.
